During a boat trip across the Gulf of Papagayo, this nice parrot decided that he couldn't stand the heat of the Guanacaste summer and decided to take a bath.

夜が明けたとき、辺りの景色はあまりにも鮮やかで、現実離れして見えた。点在する野花の中で、ピンク色のインコの群れがエサをついばんでいた。華やかな薄ピンク色のオウムもいた。さまざまな大きさや形をしたアリが、私たちの体や、荷物の上や、周辺を這いまわっている。見慣れない鳥が茂みの中で跳ねまわっていて、鳴きながら、玉虫色の青と黄色の姿を見せびらかしている。片側には薄緑色の茂みがあり、反対側にはアカシアの茂みがあった。錆色のアカシアの花びらには、黄色の斑点がついている。輝く朝の陽光の中で、茂みの緑とアカシアの色が対比している。景色があまりにも美しくて不可思議だったので、私は地球以外の惑星で目が覚めた気がした。この日こそが、私がモンキー・マイアの光景を初めて目にした日だった。モンキー・マイアは小さなキャンプ地で、ペロン半島の北東部の海岸線に面している。ペロン半島は青緑色のレッド・クリフ湾の海に囲まれている。
もう一度繰り返すが、人にとっては普通のことかもしれない。人は音をまねるのが上手で、しゃべり方を身につけるときにまねる。しかし、音をまねる動物は、数種の鳥を除いてほとんどいない。オウムと九官鳥は、人のしゃべりをまねるし、ツグミやムクドリなどは、他の鳥の鳴き声をまねる。
