エチオピアは、グレゴリオ暦とは異なるエチオピア独自の暦を使用している。エチオピアの1月1日は、グレゴリオ暦の9月11日。下の祝祭日表の年月日はグレゴリオ暦である。またグレゴリオ暦からは約7年遅れであるが（エチオピアの2000年1月1日は、グレゴリオ暦の2007年9月11日）、その理由はイエス・キリストの誕生年についての見解が違うせいといわれている。

オロモ人 40%、アムハラ人 33～35%、ティグレ人 7%、ソマリ人 4% など。

エチオピアの言語はアフロ・アジア語族が主である。連邦の公用語はアムハラ語であり、それと別に各州は州の公用語を定めることが憲法で認められている。中等教育以上では英語が教育言語となっているが、就学率が低いため、国民の大多数には通じない。他にオロモ語、ティグリニャ語、ソマリ語などがある。独自文章語としてゲエズ語も存在する。

キリスト教のコプト派（エチオピア正教会）が50%、イスラーム30%、他に、アニミズム、カトリック、プロテスタント、ユダヤ教など。資料によっては、ムスリムの方が、エチオピア正教会の信徒よりも多いとするものもある。連邦憲法11条は、政教分離を定め、国教を禁じている。
